Property by Valerie Martin – Skip it, really don’t do it.

Well thanks Ms. Martin, slow applause for your attempt to explain slavery to us. Your clever spin on writing from the perspective of the wife of a slaveowner could have been so, so compelling but no, instead it is creepy and shallow.  All of the characters’ actions are inexplicable and possibly ridiculous.  The only good part of the book is the clear explaination of the white woman’s limited rights during this period of our nation’s history, which made the white woman just a step above the slave.

Your writing has made me sad.

Come Patsy.

There is some great literature out there, but there is a lot of bad literature as well. We shouldn't all have to read it. These are my recommendations and thoughts about the books I read.
